HOLLAND, MI
The West Ottawa Wrestling family was treated Wednesday Night to our 3rd Annual Black n' White Night. This year in an attempt to prepare wrestlers and new fans for the dual meet scenario, we decided to have two full dual teams. 8 varsity positions were filled, with wrestlers needing to win the best two out of three to hold the spot. In addition to this, several exhibition matches were held to ensure every Panther got a match. Team Black posted a marginal victory over Team White. "This is a great sign for the program," Coach Ryan Lancaster commented about the scrimmage."We had numerous matches that were extremely close, which shows me that we will have some depths at a few weight classes this year." The Panthers will travel to Hesperia on Wednesday to dual Reed City and #8 Hesperia. Then Saturday, varsity heads to Zeeland's Gene Kraai Memorial and Varsity B heads to Allendale. Fortune favors the hard workers. At least, that is how it works for a wrestler. We met up with senior West Ottawa wrestler Julio "the Real Deal" Del Real to discuss the up coming season, We highlighted his off season work ethic, his aspirations and his inspirations. How did you prepare for this season? I went to work outs, (off season) tournaments and Kenowa Hills. What was being on a travel team like? Its was cool; going outside of my comfort zone wrestling other people that I've never heard of before. How were the Kenowa Hills Summer Knights Clinics? I liked them, I plan on using some of the moves that I learned there. What are some of the hurdles you have to face? Confidence, pressure to do good and to leave high school and be remembered for something. What has been for motivation in the off season? "State titles are won by the ones who love the sport; keep strong to your faith and things will work out." Who is your wrestling hero? Ramon Correa, Ryan Lancaster and Jordan Burroughs |
